Duties And Responsibilities : An Emergency
medical dispatcher is a professional telecommunicator, tasked with the
gathering of information related to medical emergencies, the provision of assistance
and instructions by voice, prior to the arrival of Emergency
Medical Services, and
the dispatching and support of EMS resources responding to an emergency
call. The term Emergency Medical Dispatcher is also a certification level and a professional designation,
certified through the Association of Public-Safety Communications
Officials-International (APCO),[1] the National Academies of Emergency
Dispatch,[2] and Power Phone, Inc.[3] Many dispatchers, whether certified or not, will
dispatch using a standard Emergency
Medical Dispatch protocol.
Salary: The median annual wage
for police, fire, and ambulance dispatchers was $36,300 in May
2012. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation
earned more than that amount, and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent
earned less than $23,190, and the top 10 percent earned more than $56,580.
Education: Emergency
medical dispatchers, or EMDs, are vital members of the emergency response
system. They are usually the first professionals to receive an emergency call
about a suddenly ill or injured person .
